What
Career Options Are Available for Sociology Students?
Most of the people who think of themselves as sociologists or are employed
as sociologists have graduate training, but BAs in sociology also are sociologists
and hold a wide variety of jobs in the private and public sectors. Majors
in sociology are equipped to pursue careers in public, private, and post-graduate
sectors in government, industry, and university settings. Those completing
a traditional major have pursued careers in sales, personnel work, public
relations, and a variety of managerial positions. Those completing either
a Law, Justice, and Society or a Social Inequality emphasis can pursue varieties
of careers within the criminal justice or political systems. Those completing
a Health and Well Being emphasis have a number of options within the medical
field open to them. Each emphasis equips majors with skills to pursue graduate
studies in Sociology, as well as specialized fields such as Law, Criminal
Justice, Medical Sociology, and Political Sociology.

Upon graduating
as a sociology major or minor from TCU, the particular types of career
opportunities available to you will largely depend upon your specific
areas of interest. A mere glimpse of the many career options potentially
available include careers in business, public relations, human resources,
health care administration, counseling, social research, marketing,
organizational consulting, and marketing research. Sociology majors are
also in demand in the public sector -- in public administration, politics,
the criminal justice system, and in federal, state, municipal, and
community agencies. Students graduate with a sociological
understanding of human behavior and social organization which are
considered valuable assets by the majority of employers.
The Sociology
degree also offers a firm foundation for students who wish to pursue
graduate school in sociology or related areas such as administration,
education, law, and business. Students interested in exploring
graduate school options should contact their Sociology advisor.
Sociology majors
and minors are encouraged to take Applied Sociology 30213, which
explores careers options related to sociology and prepares students for
internships. TCU Career Services indicates that upon graduation,
students should have had at least three internships in order to be highly
competitive in the job market. The
