Welcome to TCU's Anthropology Program!

Anthropologists study people—how we interact with each other and our environments, how our cultures are organized and made meaningful, and how we evolved into our current forms. With the broadest comparative scope of any discipline in the social sciences, anthropology has traditionally been divided into four subfields: archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and physical anthropology (also known as biological anthropology). Anthropology majors and minors at TCU have the opportunity to take courses in all four of these subfields.

Requirements for the Major in Anthropology
Majors need to take a total of 30 hours of coursework, including three of the four introductory courses the department offers (in Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Language and Culture, and Physical Anthropology). Twenty-four of the 30 required credits for majors must be taken in anthropology. With prior approval of the program director, up to 6 semester hours of courses from outside anthropology may be applied toward the major. With approval of the program director and AddRan College, credit may also be obtained for fieldwork courses taken through other accredited institutions.

Requirements for the Minor in Anthropology
Anthropology minors need to take a total of 18 hours of coursework, including two of the four introductory courses (6 hours).

Pass/No Credit Option
Students majoring in AddRan College may take up to 9 semester hours of courses on a P/NC basis. Anthropology majors may not take any courses for the major as P/NC. However, courses applied to the minor can be taken on a P/NC basis. Students minoring in anthropology are subject to the pass/no credit policy of their major department.
